At Design & Remodel Brothers, we believe that caring for our community means investing in its future. One of the most rewarding ways we do this is by mentoring and training young individuals who aspire to build careers in design, remodeling, and project management. Through our partnership with the Cherokee Office of Economic Development’s Summer Internship Program, we are proud to help shape the next generation of local talent while strengthening the connection between business, education, and community growth.
This summer, we had the privilege of working with H. B., a local high school student with a growing passion for interior design. Her enthusiasm, creativity, and curiosity brought fresh energy to our showroom and our projects. Below are some highlights and reflections from her internship experience, originally written by Annabell Meyer and Andrew Baltes.
Learning by Doing
“I thought I’d be more inside the showroom,” H. B. shared. “But I got to visit project sites, shadow my bosses during client meetings, and even attend community Woodstock meetings.”
H. B. joined our team expecting to gain computer-based design experience. Instead, she found herself immersed in every aspect of our business, from client meetings to on-site learning. This hands-on exposure gave her a true understanding of how design transforms from concept to reality.
One of her favorite moments was designing a home gym layout that she presented to our leadership team. That process of turning an idea into a tangible plan is what we love sharing with our interns: the real-world satisfaction that comes from design, creativity, and craftsmanship working together.
Growth, Mentorship, and Real Experience
“I learned about the design process, different materials, and how to interact with clients,” H. B. said. “It confirmed that interior design is a path I want to continue pursuing.”
At Design & Remodel Brothers, we see internships as more than short-term experiences. We view them as opportunities to teach professionalism, teamwork, and problem-solving — skills that last a lifetime. H. B.’s journey shows what can happen when mentorship meets motivation.
Whenever she faced challenges, our team was there to guide her. Whether she was learning new design software, correcting a project draft, or preparing a presentation, she was supported by people who cared about her success.
“Anytime I had questions, whether about the computer work or ongoing projects, my bosses and Dania were always available to help,” she explained.
A Parent’s Perspective
H. B.’s mother shared her appreciation for the program’s impact:
“This has been the best summer for H. B., in the sense that she has gotten so much real work experience that will actually benefit her now and in the future. From the very beginning, with the resume assistance, interview help, and orientation, all this was huge. To know she already has a resume reviewed by an HR professional is something not all 16-year-olds have.”
“The program provided her with even more real-world experience with interacting with coworkers, having conversations with your boss, and understanding what professionalism looks like in the workplace.”
Her words reflect exactly what we hope to achieve: giving young people the confidence, experience, and professionalism they need to take their first steps toward meaningful careers.
Encouraging the Next Generation
“Be open to new experiences,” H. B. advised. “Even if you’re not sure about a career path, this internship can help you explore different options. You’ll gain practical skills, learn about customer service, and understand how to work with clients, all while being part of your community.”
H. B.’s advice perfectly embodies what the Cherokee Office of Economic Development’s Summer Internship Program is all about: opening doors for students and giving them the chance to explore their interests through local partnerships.
At Design & Remodel Brothers, we are honored to be part of this mission. We see firsthand how programs like this strengthen our community and help students find direction, confidence, and purpose.
Looking Ahead
For H. B., this internship was just the beginning.
“Since interior design is my chosen field, the skills I gained might put me ahead in college,” she said. “And the people I met here will always be a resource for guidance.”
We are proud of H. B. and of every student who joins our company through these programs. They remind us why it is so important to stay engaged with our community, collaborate with county organizations, and give back through mentorship and education.
At Design & Remodel Brothers, we care deeply about creating opportunities that build both homes and futures.
