We are proud to share a reflection written by one of our talented design interns. She joined us over the summer and continued through the school year. Her words perfectly express the purpose of our internship program and the growth it inspires in young professionals.
Internship Reflection
This school year, I have had the opportunity to work with Design & Remodel Brothers as a design junior intern. This position is a continuation of a summer internship I completed with them and an experience I am extremely grateful for. I have been interested in interior design for years, so gaining real-world experience through this role has been helpful in affirming this as a path I would like to continue exploring. While the summer gave me a strong foundation, continuing during the school year has brought new challenges that have helped me grow personally and professionally. Balancing school, extracurricular activities, and work has pushed me to improve my organizational skills, time management, and ability to prioritize my tasks effectively. At the same time, it has developed my design abilities and professional skill set, tools that I will carry with me moving forward.
With a busier schedule during the school year, I have had to be more intentional about how I manage my time. To stay on track, I plan my week in advance, breaking down projects, deadlines, and setting time aside to focus on Design & Remodel Brothers’ assignments. Although I am still learning how to successfully balance my responsibilities, I have learned how to organize tasks into smaller, manageable steps I can complete throughout the week.
Additionally, this internship has taught me how to make the most of small breaks throughout my day. Whether it is sketching a layout before school, building a mood board during lunch, or researching design styles between classes, I have learned how to use my time productively. This approach has helped me stay on top of my assignments while also freeing up time after school for extracurricular activities and studying.
As for the internship content, I have enjoyed exploring different design styles and converting them into mood boards, as well as creating 3D designs for client projects. Through this, I have learned how to identify the key elements that define a style and gained experience applying these concepts to real projects. Before this internship, I had little understanding of how digital design tools worked, and the opportunity to utilize 3D design software has greatly improved my ability to create floor plans, experiment with design elements, and present layout concepts. Gaining confidence in these tools has built me a strong foundation in both the creative and technical aspects of interior design.
I have also appreciated the supportive team at Design & Remodel Brothers. They are always open to answering my questions, reviewing my work, and offering feedback that helps me improve my skills. Looking ahead, I am excited to build on the knowledge I have gained through their mentorship and continue developing my understanding of the field. Specifically, I would like to improve my ability to pair elements into a cohesive design and utilize more of the styles I have previously researched. Most of all, I want to continue growing as someone who can adapt to the situation at hand and deliver quality work.
